That's nothing new - at least for me. You have the host clubs in Japan in which you can enjoy the company of a man or a woman.
It seems that in China (and maybe also in Taiwan) you can rent a girlfriend or boyfriend for public holidays especially Chinese New Year. The reason is that many parents asking their kids when they will get married and if they at least already have a gf/bf. So for preventing a lot of questions and embarrassment you simply rent a gf/bf.
And sexual encounters are (normally) not included - in the host clubs as well as in that gf/bf renting system.

After watching that movie it doesn't feel that great. I'm more worried about that Keiko who has a very negative outlook in life because bad things had happened to her so often.

no you just have more people to stick there noses in, some people are just being plain shits
