Have you ever noticed that it is hard to guess an Idols height and wieght from their photos and videos? Saaya Irie is a really good example but a lot of Gravure and Junior Gravure Idols also fit this particular clever use of camera work.
Saaya- irie -32.JPG
It is impossible to tell just by looking at this photo that she is all of 4' 11¾" (1.52 m) and 114 pounds (52 kg). Personally I find this most attractive but that is besides the point. My question: Do they do this on purpose or is this just an unintentional side effect of the photography. Even when you know the model is young it is really hard to visualize her height and weight because she is often isolated from anything that would put that into perspective.

It reminds me of the famous saying from the classic movie "Jaws" where Brody says "You're gonna need a bigger boat" because he saw the shark in relation to the size of the boat (actually it almost ate him) and that gave him "perspective" as to how large the shark was (I have had a similar experience, smaller boat and shark but still pretty scary).

So do Japanese photographers try to disguise the fact that their models are often quite petite? Petite models are usually not the norm for modeling agencies. American (North and South America) and European models are tall and thin as a rule, there is almost no such thing as a petite model there.

Nor is using the camera to disguise ones height unknown, it is in fact quite common. The most famous of which was the Hollywood movie star of a bygone era by the name of Alan Ladd, who was only 5' 6¼" (1.68 m). They actually dug a trench for co-star Sopia Loren in a movie during a scene so they could look of similar height. But even today actors like Tom Cruise and even Sylvest Stallone (who is only5' 9½" (1.77 m)) have been made to look taller on screen than the actually are.

But is that what I am seeing here with some of our gravure models? You be the judge. I would love to hear your opinions on the subject.

ceewan- - - - I agree! It is a Japanese director's plan to project the girl as young as possible, therefore filming her as tiny as possible!
The exception I think is Ai Shinozaki, where she films very large! Actually Ai is 5'3" (160cm) and her measurements are 87-60-88cm (34-24-35) her breasts being 34 are not overly large but her bra/cup size has been listed as a huge G or H! Those height/waist/ & hips #'s put her in the small range but they film her breasts to their biggest and she films height 5'8" to 5' 10"!
Most if not all of the u-15 idols from the past were listed as 12, 13, & 14 when in reality they were 18 to 20 years old!

That's called hailo effect.

I don't think they use those camera tricks at all. At least not to make them look taller. I always thought she was a femanlet. They do use it to make them look more big boobed and if the girl is ugly in JAV they do use photoshop so she looks younger, more chiseled face, better skin, narrower nose, lighter eyed etc. But feel free to post a testimony of any photografer or director saying the opposite.

So, you thought she was taller ? I always guess they're (idols in general) super short. Not surprised at all about her height or weight. She's so stumpy with her short arms and legs and I like her even much because of it.

And about disguising the models b/c they are petite: I thought that was a plus for them. Japanese males usually don't like a female who looks powerful and heightmoggs them. It could be changing with the herbivore tendency nowadays, the fantasy to be dominated by a female, but it's normally the other way around = they want the girls to look submissive, short, naive etc.

I'm really surprised you thought they were taller. You seem intelligent and aware. Btw, how tall you thought she was ?

Well Stallone being close to 5'10'' is not short either + he's lean with abs + he's face is chiseled + norwood zero which gives the overall greek sculpture hailo effect. His only bad feature are his eyes. Same applies to Cruise: hailo effect b/c he's face is so perfect (some would argue he's got a big nose). They do use lifts in some movies though but we are hard wired to think they're taller anyway.

You got a hailo effect from Saayas and other models beauty. Our brains are hard wired to attribute other good characteristics to people who are good looking. And the opposite is the failo effect which makes us think badly about ugly people.

All following videos are must watchs. They talk about the hailo effect.

Interesting take on the subject....I don't agree but I do respect the effort you made into the subject matter.

I happen to prefer females shorter rather than taller, (I just am not a lover of Amazons) so that would put a dent in your theory, at least for me. I just assumed Saaya was in the 5'4'' or taller range, which is fairly average and by no means suggestive of any other attribute. Although I do object to you referring to her as "stumpy with her short arms and legs", as they look to fit her stature in a very attractive manner and don't look stumpy or short at all (although everyone is entitled to an opinion).

I don't think that porn producers spend any other expenditure on photshopping, they are cheap bastards. That is just my opinion though. As far as making breasts look bigger....well on shorter women large breasts always look bigger because they are out of proportion to a womans size.

I wouldn't presume to say what Japanese prefer in their women however I would warn against such generalizations as all people are different and thus all people have different likes and dislikes. Generalizations about a race make one sound bigoted (although I am sure that was not your intent whatsoever). I also would not equate short females with submissive ones, spirit is not defined by height.

Stallone is actually closer to 5'7'', though you will find 5'9" and 5'10" on most websites (I did some recent digging to come up with that). In "Rocky 3" Mr T looked pretty big but he is only 5'10". However Hulk Hogan really towered over Sly and seriously looked a foot and a half taller. However Talia Shire is only 5'4" and standing next to Stallone she looked taller (because Stallone was percieved as taller). Most Heavy Weight fighters are over 6' (with a few notable exceptions) and in Rocky I think they attempted to show him as larger on purpose to advance that perspective. And that is enough fun with that.

The hailo effect is an interesting bit. But it is psychology and that is not an exact science (which basically means it is mostly crapola). I prefer sociology, which is the closest to an exact science of the human sciences. Sociology deals in facts and not supposition. Psychology is fun but don't get caught up with their parlor tricks, they are constantly correcting themselves and their success and failures are mostly a matter of percentages.

I also do prefer short women. Always did. And usually only being cute is enough for me I'm not expecting a female model. Women on the other hand think the opposite (from dating website statistics):

Lol wow I always assume they're less than 5'3.

On the other hand females do prefer over 6' tall males as you can confirm below:

She's one of my all time 500 favorites too. And yes she would be considered too short for modeling in the West. Stumpy carries a negative conotation I recognize.

JAV covers

I got attracted by the cover and disgusted by the real girl in the content many times.

Sorry for the generalization. I was making reference to average behavior. I know there's exceptions. It's still common knowledge though. I guess I need statistics but too lazy right now.

I also would not equate short females with submissive ones, spirit is not defined by height.

From what anime is that ? lol
Makes a lot of sense since often times short people got short person complex and try to overcompensate for their lack of intimidation from their height and project on their tone, expression, clothes, aggressive behavior etc.

Well if he's 5'7, it does make sense why Dolph Lundgren looked gigantic in Rock 4. They must have used the opposite process in this sequence.

You probably didn't watched the documentaries I sent in the other post. No one can escape from the halo effect.

You caught me there. I rarely watch embedded videos here, even if they are from youtube. Nonetheless, just because they tell you something in a video doesn't make it true. People have idiosyncratic traits and their personalities are largerly formed as an accumulation of the influences in the world around them from birth (possibly even pre-birth) in a huge number of different ways from chemicals, nutrients, learning, visual and other sensory inputs as well as interactions with others. It is impossible to predict anyones reactions with absolute certainity because of this.....though some people are willing to make a life of trying. Informative videos, as well as books actually, are rarely objective and are used to portray and/or attempt to sell a conclusion or opinion. An obvious example of this would be product advertisements and political ads but less obvious ones would be actual teaching videos and text books. Take things with a "grain of salt" and if you are truly interested in a subject study it from a variety of sources, including countering views if possible.

I did actually look into the term "halo-effect" by-the-way so I was comfortable with my stance. The term "usually" is fairly common when describing it. "Usually" is about as reliable a thing to go on as a bet on a horse to win at Churchill Downs. Nice chatting about the subject with ya though.
