Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has reportedly expressed his wish to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to his home prefecture of Yamaguchi.

Abe was speaking at a meeting of his supporters in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture on Saturday.

The Japanese government is trying to arrange a Putin visit to Japan by the end of the year.

According to participants, the Prime Minister indicated that if the visit happens, he would like to invite the Russian President to Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Abe and Putin held a meeting in the southern Russian resort city of Sochi in May. They are scheduled to hold talks again in Vladivostok on the sidelines of an economic forum next month.

Abe hopes another top-level meeting in Japan would advance negotiations on a peace treaty, including the bilateral territorial issue.
