Synopsis / Plot
From Juzo Itami, the critically acclaimed director behind such films as Tampopo and The Funeral, comes the winning melodrama Shizukana Seikatsu (A Quiet Life). Based on the 1995 novel by Itami's brother in law and Nobel Prize-winning author Kenzaburo Oe, this film adaptation centers on the exploits of Iiyo (Atsura Watabe), a mentally challenged, but musically gifted teen, and Maa (Hinako Saeki), the boy's artistic younger sister who is put in charge of caring for her sibling after their parents go to Australia. Loosely based on the real life experiences of Kenzaburo's Oe's handicapped son, the story confronts the unique issues and difficulties facing both the handicapped and those who must take care of them.
Notes
Shizukana Seikatsu was nominated for four Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Atsuro Watabe), Best Supporting Actor (Masayuki Imai), and Best Music Score (Hikaru Oe), with Atsuro Watabe taking home the Newcomer of the Year prize. Featuring an appearance by Juzo Itami's wife Nobuko Miyamoto.
