A List of Films You Would Suggest

Hi all,

I need your suggestions based on your knowledge of Japanese or Asian culture in general, looking for some outstanding movies that depict these societies. I don't like war movies, or actions (explosions of cars and the like), nor science-fiction.

Adventures, love. Ideally look for movies in original version (no added voices), only subtitles in English if needed, but if subtitles are not available, that's still okay.

Are there some beautiful Japanese, or Asian, films you would recommend to watch, a list of must see movies.

To let you know the kind of films I like, here is a small list.

Memories of a Geisha

The Lover

Indochine

The Scent of Green Papaya

Himalaya

A Passage to India
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087892/

Kama Sutra : A Tale of Love

Out of Africa

How about horror? some of the best Japanese movies of all time are horror movies. In Japan, ghost stories are an art form that goes back for centuries. To get in touch with a society, you should not ignore their darker nature.

Ringu

Ju-on: The Grudge
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364385/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Of copurse you could try a cute comedy starring one of our own Idols:
Pantsu no ana the movie: Doutei soushitsu rapusodi (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2053413/
(I think I posted this here somewhere.....)

Hi Ceewan,

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not really into horror films (although I like the classical movie "The Exorcist"), but could have a look at Ju-on: The Grudge, and "A Hole in My Panty" sounds appealing (at least the tittle :D ).

Well, The Exorcist had an all-star cast but to be perfectly honest it is far from my favorite horror movie (a good one though and yes, a classic). A better movie would be Poltergiest, which was also an inspiration for Ringu. Love the trivia feature at IMDB:

Ringu was the highest grossing horror film in Japanese history.

I don't post many Japanese movies, subtitles are hard on my eyes. Try the movie download section though, (if you can find the Japanese movies hidden amongst the Cinese and Korean ones).

not sure if it depicts japanese society/culture that well (other than the stigma surrounding undertakers) but Okuribito (Departures) was pretty good.

Thank you Noid. As seen in my little list, I prefer classical movies, not a fan of action, science-fiction, anime, kung-fu and co., but your suggested list may be helpful for those you like that kind, so that's precious ;)
