Why don't JAV companies sell their censored porn as uncensored outside of Japan?

What I mean is, whenever they release a new flick with the mosaic in place, take that same flick, and sell it to a porn distributor outside of Japan so they can sell it without the mosaic. Is that still illegal?

I was just thinking about this because I saw a JAV flick that didn't have mosaic but I remember that it did the first time I saw it.

Yes, it's illegal if the foreign distributor allows reverse-import of the footages back into Japan. That includes allowing Japanese IPs to download the raw footages digitally from the oversea distributor.

Now even if the overseas distributor blocks all Japanese from reverse-import on phyiscal release and ban all Japanese IP from downloading digital. There is still the risk of Piracy. So they do not need the competitions.

The only way this could work is to give years old releases that nobody really care about. Look at how the few legit distributor of English sub AV are given releases from 2014/2015 to be release as "new".

jwlim80: hope the last line wasn't a jab at us. :) Actually, all the studios we work with now let us license brand spanking new releases. One even let us pick out titles from the next month that weren't even listed on their site yet. It just takes us some months to get them subtitled (at least 6 months from license date to update date in the best of circumstances) and sometimes older titles are better--in fact, given how thick mosaic has gotten, unless one's really picky about seeing a title with a current "It" actress, going back a few years will allow you to see even more skin.

Otherwise, your comment is pretty spot-on. The way Japan's domestic distribution system is setup, it would be suicide for a domestic studio to go ahead and release their wares abroad without mosaic.

I wrote more about this here: https://www.mydearestdesire.com/tour/articles/345/why-isnt-all-japanese-uncensored-part-one

No offence meant, just speaking from personal observation. It will be great if you can have a concurrent release with your japanese counterpart.

It’s always possible to juggle around releases to perhaps do that (concurrent release), but studios are aware of our ‘lag’ from licensing to update so this is a reason why some are OK with us picking out new titles.

Also, the bigger issue really is ‘the big picture’. I can’t speak for all JAV fans outside of Japan, but I can speak for our own subscription base and based on access numbers, ‘new’ titles aren’t necessarily as popular as ‘old’ ones. What our subscribers enjoy more than anything else are titles that don’t necessarily star any famous names—or even recognizable faces. Rather just groups of people doing abnormal things.

In fact, our future update schedule is pushing hard in this direction with at least one update each month from here on out being a ‘group does abnormal x’ theme (next month we’re showing VANDR-089).

Our most popular title of the year is this one ( https://www.zenra.net/amateur-nanpa-017-having-sex-while-my-friend-watches-part-one-hd-subtitles.htm ). It is 2-3 years old and really outside of Yui Kawagoe (who does not appear as herself), it’s a total amateur-fest.

What I am getting at is although within JAV communities such as A-O, it seems like new titles starring famous actresses are where it’s at, but once you zoom out and also include the casual fans--for us at least--what’s popular is not who’s in the movie or even when it’s filmed, but what it’s about.

like Inertia said, selling their vids to foreign company and re release it as uncenssored = suicide for them

yes some has 2 versions : uncenssored and censsored, but they keep it minimum, or they sell it not as full movie, but partially / few scenes
