A release of this Ichikawa is already available at AsiaTorrents, maybe dead by now, at any rate that was a lousy VHS-rip. This print comes from a newly-struck HD master (captured from Hulu), and it smashes the old sources to bits. I also found some screens from a DVDrip, and the improvements in colours (horribly washed-out on the DVD) and detail are astounding. You can find a brief comparison below.
The movie is heartwarming and sharp at the same time, and I bet some will be delighted to enjoy this through a high-res release (I wish some company would release all these classics on Blu-ray...).
