what do you need to play these large .mpv files?

.m4v is an apple thing.

the players that play it are [non-inclusive list]:

The format, with DRM removed, can also be played in the webOS Video Player for use on the Palm Pre, Palm Pixi smartphones. It is also playable by the Android operating system with its video player. It can also be played with the BS Player Pro. It is used as the default video conversion format for HandBrake and Air Video Server on the Mac.

i have media player classic which plays .m4v as well as any quicktime type video. my vlc player plays .m4v with the proper codec.

cudos to greenglobe: thanks to greenglobe below teaching "old dogs new tricks" - i was trained in the mpeg/.avi era and have been stuck in the mud and have not moved quick enough into new technologies, i.e., mp4 - the fact that i could cut and paste and m4v = mp4 was not in my technical vocabulary

I use KMPlayer and love it. It plays the files fine but displayed an icon for VLC player.
I changed the extension to mp4 and the icon is OK and it seems to play fine.

I am wondering if it is in fact an mp4 file codec.

so it is mp4 based but every player that plays mp4 cannot play m4v [e.g., windows media player].
