Synopsis:
Released in 1972, it features Imamura visiting a small island in the Philippines and talking to the fisherman there. They are divided into two ethnic groups, split more by religion than they are race. The pirates of the title loom over their activities in a way that is, as it turns out, mythical. When the director finally tracks down the supposed head buccaneer, he finds a figure who is far from the romanticized image the name "pirate" conjures.
