SYNOPSIS:
Obayashi creates a very suspensful 'who dunnit' film in a rather unusual way. The camera's and therefore our point of view is for much of the film that of an interviewer. Occasionally we see the interviewer or a micorphone boom is allowed to enter the frame. The people being interviewed look into the camera a lot. But Obayashi also slides smoothly into flashback mode and the interviewer either narates or we see the action with live dialogue. This is done so effortlessly that you really hardly notice the regular shifting back and forth in time.

Over a hundred people are interviewed, all giving us a slice of their lives from a personal point of view. Slowly new details are filled in and the puzzle begins to reveal parts of the whole. Although this goes on for 2 hours and 40 minutes, the pacing is steady and smooth and the suspense builds so naturally that you hardly notice the time passing.

But I think one of the great strengths of this film is the way the lives of so many ordinary people are revealed. As the film takes place after the bursting of the economic bubble in Japan, a lot of people are hard pressed to find jobs that pay enough to live off of. Obayashi lets us into their lives and emotions in ways that create empathy and identity. We have been in or observed similar situations in our own lives. By the end, you feel like you have met a lot of people, can identify with some and sympathize with quite a few. Ultimately the mystery is revealed, but by that time so is the humanity of the people who lived in urban Japan in the 1990's.

This is not only a great mystery/suspense film, but also an appealing look at life and the ways people get by. It is worthy of it's 7.6 IMDB rating.
