Synopsis: Rookie detective Egami Toru (Matsuzaka Tori) has been assigned to Team Z of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigative Division. It is a newly established special unit aimed at eliminating the rising number of unsolved cases. As a unit directly under the control of Ishizaki Samon (Tsurumi Shingo), the head of criminal investigations, special investigative missions are permitted. The team members are all individualistic people: Toguchi Yuhei (Ikeuchi Hiroyuki), a martial arts expert and top student of Tokyo University’s law faculty; Mishima Haruo (Musaka Naomasa) who has spent his whole career on the frontline and worked his way up the ranks; Kobayakawa Minoru (Mitsushima Shinnosuke) who builds his own investigation equipment because inventions are his hobby; and the criminal psychology expert Sawatari Reiko (Fueki Yuko). Everyone does as they please and ignore Egami. Yet another member is Sano Nozomi (Anne) who is Egami’s childhood friend. They last met 10 years ago. Meanwhile, Team Z joins an investigation into a series of corporate extortion cases. A succession of small bombs have been planted in the products of the big food company Dainippon Foods and a criminal who identifies himself as Bakudan Seijin sends a threat by letter declaring “I’ve kidnapped 130 million Japanese citizens. I can murder a person I like at any time and at any place.” The letter also states that 150 million yen in cash should be brought to each of the two designated locations – a room at a Kabukicho internet cafe at 10.00 am and a coin locker in the vicinity of Fuchu Station at 3.00 pm. The letter ends with the mysterious characters e4411. Team Z starts its investigation under the supervision of Ishizaki. It is determined that the rigged bombs are homemade. Dainippon Foods was suspected of insider trading and manipulating the expiry dates of its supplies in the past so it is possible that the criminal’s motive is revenge against the company. Nozomi masquerades as a company employee and acts as the courier for the ransom money. Egami goes along with her. The two of them head to the first designated location. It is thought that a confined space like the internet cafe will make it easy to apprehend the criminal but the criminal trifles with Egami and Nozomi through his unexpected actions. After that, the investigation makes little headway. The case then takes an unanticipated turn that has something to do with the pasts of Egami and Nozomi … …
