SYNOPSIS/REVIEW:
"From the deepest archives of Japanese film history comes this superbly restored edition of one of the epic adventures of Miyamoto Musashi, the greatest swordsman in all the land. Known primarily as the first to use both of his swords together, we learn here how he came to devise the Niten-ryu or Two Heavens As One style. Not only must he face the powerful martial art priests of Hongo-In Temple, Musashi crosses paths with Old Baiken, the deadly master of Chain & Sickle. For this classic work to have survived the destruction of Japanese samurai films during the occupation is nothing short of a miracle." (From the cover of the re-release DVD)
The naming of this film is confusing because of the way they changed it when they made a modern re-release. Nitoryu kaigen is the original title and it fits just fine. I suspect someone in marketing got in on the decision to change the name!
Musashi Miyamoto was a real character who existed in Japan in the 1600s. His story was popularized and obviously embellished by the novelist Yoshikawa Eiji. There are a lot of film versions about episodes in MM's life right from early silent films on. This version, by the great Daisuke ITO is little known. It is a great boon that of all the samurai films burnt in the fire bombing of WW2 and the determined effort of General MacArthur to destroy every one he could find, this film survives.
