Yura Yura Teikoku (Yura Yura meaning the way of "floating slowly" or "hanging in the air" and Teikoku meaning "empire" ) are a prolific three piece psychedelic rock band consisting of vocalist and guitarist Shintaro Sakamoto, bassist Chiyo Kamekawa and drummer Ichiro Shibata. The excitingly eclectic and expressionistic sounds of Yura Yura Teikoku meant that they soon emerged from Tokyo's underground music scene that centred around Kōenji in the earlier 80's, to record their first major album 333 in 1997.
The band, although going through lineup changes, remained one of the most significant and enduring psychedelic bands in japan throughout the 90's and 00's, until their disbandment in 2010. Although the band remained relatively unknown outside of japan, they have become legendary figures in japanese music due to high critical acclaim, sell out concerts and the unique sound that defines them.
