Synopsis / Plot In the film, Kobayashi himself stars as a grief-stricken man named Junichi. Having already lost his wife to cancer, his life is sent into a tailspin when his daughter is suddenly stabbed to death by a classmate. Shattered by his loss, Junichi quits his job in Tokyo and moves north to Hokkaido where he finds work as a laborer. By chance, he spots a woman named Noriko (Makiko Watanabe) working at a local inn. She’s the mother of the student who killed his daughter. The two go on with their daily routines, never working up the courage to say a word to one another, but for some reason their lives become entwined by the very incident that caused them both to run away in the first place.
