Plot/Synopsis
The story takes place on a small island near the main island of Okinawa, with many of the characters are trying to come to terms with their past and present. On the cliff that skirts the shore of the small island, sits an open-air burial ground containing the skull of a kamikaze pilot who was shot down during the last days of World-War II. When the wind blows through the bullet hole in the skull, it produces a whistling sound, revered by the inhabitants as the Crying Wind.
Okinawa is a place where the past and present are folded into one. The unhealed scars of World War II, the horrors that the Okinawan people faced at the hand of the Japanese Imperial soldiers, and the trials that the Okinawan faced and still face today fill the background and story of this film.
Fuon (The Crying Wind, 2004) is based on a series of stories by Medoruma Shun, a prize-winning writer from Okinawa, who also wrote the screenplay and is directed by Higashi Yoichi.
