Synopsis:
This drama of middle-class life in postwar Japan tells the story lower-middle-class workers in the city of Kawasaki, and their troubles and travails. (from Rotten Tomatoes)
The movie is about the joys and struggles of a young couple living and working with the husband’s family. Roychi is a responsible and dedicates shop owner; his wife is making her best to fit in the new family; the mother doesn’t hide the fact that she misses the old days when marriage wasn’t decide by love; the brother is a student who doesn’t help with the family business and the sister (Hideko Takamine, Mikio’s Naruse favorite actress) is a bitter woman with a wounded leg. Despite the description, the movie is light and pleasant, a entertainment picture by Kobayashi, completed only five years before his first acclaimed masterpiece (The Human Condition I).
