Antenna is a complex and disquieting psychological drama about a young man who’s never recovered from the trauma of his sister’s disappearance, and seeks sadomasochistic experiences to help him understand his pain. Haunting, disturbing but ultimately rewarding.
Years after the unsolved disappearance of eight year-old Marie, news that a missing girl has been found stirs up painful memories for Marie’s severely messed up family. Her father fell ill and died soon after her disappearance, her uncle killed himself under suspicious circumstances, her younger brother, Yuya, suffers from anxiety attacks and claims to feel his sister’s presence via an inner ‘antenna,’ while her mother maintains a faltering grip on reality, dressing Yuya up in Marie’s clothes and confusing him with the missing girl. Marie’s older brother, Yuichiro, is a philosophy student who studies sadomasochistic experience and how people explore pain. He interviews Naomi, an S&M queen, and is soon captivated by the dominatrix, returning regularly to see her. Through their violent sessions, Yuichiro slowly unravels the repressed memories and guilt over his silence about what he witnessed as a child.
