Based on the same Lafcadio Hearn "Yuki Onna" story told in Masaki Kobayashi's classic film "Kwaidan", but otherwise unrelated (despite Tom Weisser's typically misinformed and erroneous write-up in multiple editions of his books - different studio, different director, different actors, different soundtrack, different year of release), Kaidan Yuki Jorou features one of the most beautiful and unforgettable female monsters in all of Japanese cinema.
The word "jorou" literally translates to "prostitute" in Japanese, but the symbolic sense here is one of corruption or evil, in contrast with the visual purity of snow. Consideration of the story of "Snow White" may illustrate the idea in the choice of title, particularly as the character of the title character is in no way a whore, but does possess both a light and a dark side.
Directed by Tanaka Tokuzo, who began his film career as assistant director under Kurosawa Akira on "Rashomon" and Mizoguchi Kenji on "Ugetsu Monogatari", went on to direct "Oe-yama Shuten-dôji" (Demon of Mt. Oe), three of the original 60s Zatoichi films, the first and tenth entries in the Nemuri Kyoshiro series, numerous yakuza and ninja films, and the atmospheric bakeneko/kaibyo horror film "Hiroku Kaibyoden". He also directed "Daisatsujin Orochi" (The Betrayal) with Ichikawa Raizo, one of the greatest jidaigeki films ever made.
Starring the gorgeous Fujimura Shiho ("Wrath of Daimajin", several Zatoichi and Nemuri Kyoshiro films, as well as Tanaka's "Daisatsujin Orochi", and more recently in Hirada Masato's Inugami) as the snow woman.
Featuring one of Ifukube Akira's most memorable soundtrack compositions, and fine performances by the entire cast, this is my all-time favorite kaidan film. If you know the story from "Kwaidan", you will no doubt find this version compares admirably.
