Film History
MomotarÅ: Umi no Shinpei (桃太郎 æµ·ã®ç¥žå…µ, lit. Momotaro's Gods-Blessed Sea Warriors or Momotaro, Sacred Sailors) is the first Japanese feature-length animated film. It was directed by Mitsuyo Seo, who was ordered to make a propaganda film for the war by the Japanese Naval Ministry. Shochiku Moving Picture Laboratory shot the 74-minute film in 1944 and screened it on April 12, 1945. It is a sequel to MomotarÅ no Umiwashi (Momotaro's Sea Eagles), a 37-minute film released in 1943 by the same director. Director Seo had previously seen Disney's Fantasia in 1940, and inspired by this hoped his films would inspire hope in children. The film was presumed confiscated and burnt by the American occupation, but a surviving negative was found at Shochiku's depot in 1984. There are a number of musical sequences, the most famous of which is the "Song of AIUEO" (アイウエオã®æŒ AIUEO no Uta), a scene where Japanese soldiers teach local animals how to speak. This song was given homage in Osamu Tezuka's Kimba the White Lion. (Modified from Wikipedia and the prior torrent description.)
