SUMMARY/DESCRIPTION
Kanashimi no Balladonna is an art house film directed by Eiichi Yamamoto in 1973. It is the third and last of the Mushi Pro Animerama films, and departs in a different direction from its predecessors. While all three films were based on legend, the first two being Cleopatra (1970) and A Thousand and one Nights (1969), Belladonna draws its inspiration from darker sources, specifically Jules Michelet's book Satanism and Witchcraft (FR: La Sorcière). Medieval witchcraft legends and the French tale of Jeanne D'Arc (Joan of Arc) also serve as inspiration for the film. Belladonna tells the story of Jeanne, a peasant woman who is r***ing on her wedding night by a regional lord. Considered defiled by her husband, Jeanne is shunned and left on her own. The film is Jeanne's tale as she is eventually accused of witchcraft.
Belladonna boasts a unique animation style consisting of both still paintings and full animation. It also departs from typical animation in that the paintings are mostly watercolor, and the animation is done in a matching style featuring soft colors and few lines. The film is also remembered for its features frequent psychedelic and erotic interludes, elegant use of colors, and minimalist style.
