In the autumn of 2001, Hirayama Hidemori (Watanabe Ken) discovers that he has been infected by a virus which may cause the onset of leukemia when he goes to donate blood. Hirayama had raised four daughters, and even though he was poor as a child, he had made a living doing construction work fraught with danger and was successful at one time. As he wanders the streets in a daze, something catches his eye at a flea market. It is a picture of the Virgin Mary that Nakahara Yoko (Nagasaku Hiromi) is selling. Captivated by the combination of grief and anger in the depths of Hirayama’s eyes, Yoko unthinkingly reaches for her movie camera and films his expression. He soon buys the picture and leaves the flea market. Yoko is taken aback. For among the bills for 10,000 yen, is a piece of paper which describes the results of a an antibody test as positive … … A year later in summer, Hirayama has changed his way of life which had been solely in the pursuit of money until the discovery of his illness, and begins volunteer activities. Deciding to dedicate the rest of his life to helping those in need, he starts a shelter called ‘Shinjuku Kabukicho Refuge’ in order to help people who are facing problems such as abuse and excessive debt. - Jdrama Weblog
