SYNOPSIS/REVIEW:
Known for his skillful realism, Tadashi Imai filmed Tsutomu Mizukami’s novel of the same name. A native of Echigo, Gonsuke (Mikuni), is working far from home, and envies his countryman Tomekichi (Ozawa) for his excellent reputation at work and his beautiful wife.
Called back to his hometown when his mother falls seriously ill, Gonsuke is driven with lust and r***s Tomekichi’s wife, Oshin (Sakuma). Set in Oyashirazu as winter changed into spring, the enmity between the two men leads them and the woman tossed between the two to their irreversible fate. — Federation of Japanese Films Industry.
This is another beautiful black and white film. Director Imai's use of light and shade makes for a very rich black, grey and white palette. He directs some fine actors in a portrayal of a self-centred brute whose selfish act starts the wheel of karma turning to its inevitable sadness, misery and tragedy. There is the suggestion that the brute is as he is because of his time as a soldier.
Once again Rentaro Mikuni turns in a great job as an all too human villain... weak, jealous, selfish, crass and a brute. The female lead is played by Yoshiko Sakuma who ballances Mikuni's efforts with a brilliant portrayal of fear, despair and desparation. The author of the original novel, Mizukami also wrote "Straits of Hunger" and "Ballad of Orin" which were filmed by Tomu Uchida and Masahiro Shinoda respectively. This is a similar story of actions and consequences, the wheel of karma, well told by Imai and worth watching.
