The sand on Hoshizuna Beach in Okinawa in Japan is made up
almost entirely of the star-shaped exoskeletons of tiny creatures.

The " stars " you can see, are in fact the exoskeletons of foraminifers
a class of protist.

Most live in the sediments of the sea floor and can wash ashore after
they die.
