Intl group seeks r*** game ban / Govt rapped over lax child pornography laws; protest letters urged

The Yomiuri Shimbun

A Japanese computer game in which players r*** women and girls, make them pregnant and then force them to get abortions, has stirred international criticism among human rights groups and lawmakers overseas.

New York-based international human rights organization Equality Now has demanded that the sale of the game, developed by a Yokohama-based firm in 2006, be banned in Japan and overseas.

In the videogame, a player gropes two girls, who appear to be teenagers, and their mother while on a train, then r***s the three making them pregnant. The player then forces the three to terminate their pregnancies.

Since earlier this year, the game has been discussed by overseas-based human rights organizations.

In Britain, lawmakers learned that the game could be purchased on the Amazon online shopping site and proposed a motion in Parliament in February expressing their opposition to domestic distribution of the game.

Following this move--widely reported in the British media and other countries--Britain-based Amazon.co.uk halted the sale of the game later that month, with a similar decision made by the Amazon headquarters in the United States soon after.

In Japan, however, regulation of child pornography is lax, so the game is still available via online shopping sites, despite Amazon Japan recently halting sales.

In early May, Equality Now released a statement saying that in Japan the games industry profits from games featuring violence against girls and women. It also criticized the growing market for pornography found in Japan known as "roricon," or "Lolita complex," which has a child pornography theme.

In the statement, the human rights organization also criticizes the government, saying it should take measures to ban the distribution of such games.

On Wednesday, Equality Now began asking its 30,000 members in 160 countries to send letters of protest to those who make and sell computer games that feature violation of women, such as r*** and confinement.

It called for letters of protest to be sent to the Yokohama-based games maker; companies that stock such games for sale; Prime Minister Taro Aso and other senior government officials.

Japan-based human rights groups also have started lobbying the industry to make changes.

Under domestic law, salacious images of children aged less than 18 are considered child pornography, and production and sale of such images is banned.

However, possession of child pornography by individuals--including images downloaded on computers--is not considered illegal in the country.

The production and sale of animated and computer-generated pornographic images are not regulated under the law.

International groups have called for the possession of child pornography to be made illegal in Japan.

An official of the Yokohama maker in question told The Yomiuri Shimbun: "We were given official approval for domestic sale of this game by the institution the industry established for voluntary screening [of games]."

" We weren't aware of the protest by the overseas human rights organization, so I can't comment on the issue," the official said.

Hiroshi Nakasatomi, a gender studies researcher and associate professor of Fukushima University, said: "Japan is known as a leading producer of game software and animation featuring sexual abuse of women.

"The genre is called hentai [pervert] overseas, and human rights groups abroad have long been critical [of this type of product]."

I wonder why Illusion removed Rapelay from the Website, after this great publicity it should sell like crazy.

oh well

Personally I enjoyed the game very much, true I am sick and twisted but in all fairness I was like that before I played it. I'm really not sure what about rapelay they are objecting to? I don't think the objecters have played it to be honest with you. The females never scream,(well maybe they do complain and whine a little) or fight back and the objective after all is to please them...no, really it is. To unlock everything you have to make the females your willing sex slaves. This is pure r*** fantasy gaming and I have seen it again and again. Sure the story is dark and twisted, it is about a guy who r***s women after all.

Never played Battle Raper.

Other r*** games include:
Virgin Roster
Jewel Knights Crusaders
Tsuki - Possesion
Babyface
Bikko 3 (also Illusion)

There are many more games with r*** in them not to mention tentacle r***. I can't imagine the producers being forced into removing them all.

And then there is real life fantasy r*** porn, which is all over the place. But they can't get win against the porn industry, they have tried and failed. I agree this is a bad precedent Illusion is setting and they are losing money with tons of free publicity. It is possible the game is still available by special request, maybe?
Either way thanks for the news, surprising but enlightening.

i can't really fault them for wanting to get rid of these games. see above link.

its people like that that will make raep eroges extinct. unfortunately just as there are sane people who are able to tell differences between reality and games and know what's right or wrong there will always be people not in the right state of mind who end up doing things like this.

there are a lot of other games that's a whole lot worse than Rapelay. but the chances of them finding those are pretty slim since the only reason Rapelay got targeted is cause of its English title.

Pretty sick crime indeed, committed by a very sick individual. But this is life, some people mix up reality and fantasy on a daily basis. I don't know if you can honestly say any crime, (especially a violent crime), against another human being is totally sane. I understand delusions, waking from one is earthshattering. The fact that he was able to bring himself to kill his victim in such a cold, ruthless, and horrible manner shows a deep psychotic personality. I believe he would have eventually killed her regardless. He didn't want a sex slave, he didn't want to be adored or needed or loved. I could be wrong but that is just not my impression. I believe he hated women, he wanted to debase, humiliate, hurt, and finally murder them. Perhaps it was from his own feelings of inferiority or even some event or events in his past. That is my opinion anyway.

As far as r*** games go I think they are just fantasies of empowerment over others. Sex slave fantasies I would say are fantasies of others being grateful for your empowerment over them. This is the heart of sadism and masochism. One needs the other, an actual balance of power. Of course this is again, just my opinion. I find, overall, psychology to be an inaccurate science because of peoples base idiosyncrasies,(people act differently given the same stimuli).

Then again only because I enjoy playing Rome Total War doesnt mean I ride around with my cavalry playmates and try to conquer Londinium on a daily basis.

Where there are people there will be deviations and deviants. That is the nature of the Human mind and it has been that way since the beginning of times.

Now, CNN, ABC, NBC are showing on network news how cities are bombed, accidents, and much worse, and film and media spews out war and "bloody business" every day.

So keep in mind, the critics against the game sit in one of the most violent nations of the world, with the highest number of unsolved murders in history, and they don't find THAT sickening enough so they take they're time out to go overseas to bash in heads of people they dont even know the social structures of?

I made a rant post in
http://www.akiba-online.com/forum/showthread.php?p=259875#post259875

For everything not related to the news here.
However sick the crime above is, it doesn't give a private lobby organization the right to perform field operative services as some sort of International policing agency. There are professionals enough to do that already.

Pathetic

This is a ******* joke. "Anti-free Speech" Feminists ? What kind of ******* retarded shit is that? And how does that even make any god damn sense? If they're so against people speaking their minds and having their own thoughts, they should just throw a collar on themselves and go be some slobs r*** slave. I mean, they shouldn't be allowed to speak up against that sort of thing either.

Unless the whole "anti-free speech" thing was just written as someone being angry at these people on about how ridiculous they are.

I hate ALL KINDS of feminists... seriously, I do. You want to be the bread winner? Go the **** on, I'll sit at home all day, play games and watch the kids when you bust your ass. God is a woman? Really? Okay, hopefully she has nice slender long legs and a big rack. I REALLY DON'T CARE AND NO ONE ELSE REALLY DOES EITHER.

And you men, out there in the world, on the internet, on this very forum... who marry these kind of women and know how they are... for shame; I would have put a gun in my mouth and blown out my brains years ago.

Fucking feminists should solve problems within their borders before they start bitching and saying "we can do it! and so can you!", not that it'll work but in doing so they can emulate an illusion of "leverage" against us. We, the Asians are more conservative than our Western counterparts so how come this happened? Arggh.. the way things are going I may have to join them anti-feminist-bitching-shitty-non-sense-towards-other-countries org.
Feminists say we should treat the women as equals but society says we should also be gentle to them. Does that sound fair? Sure, it may sound alright if I like the girl or I'm related to her. Otherwise, it'll just be some hypocritical gesture in this hypocritical world that is only meant to illuminate an illusion of equality.

illegalizing loli sex in hentai : illegalizing recreational use of tobacco ::
illegalizing r*** scenes in hentai : illegalizing recreational use of alcohol

This is how I see it. Putting aside one's personal views on all four of the examples I used for the analogy :p , what I'm suggesting is that it's very tough to fight Big Tobacco but it can be done. Similarly, it is not impossible for the Western world to illegalize loli content while still claiming to preserve free speech, etc etc. This is precisely why so many lolikons get their panties in a twist every time a Western government proposes a new law which reeks of free speech restrictions: because they know just how easy it would be for loli to be made illegal, even if to do so would be to go against the very principles which established modern Western societies.

However, just as alcohol consumption is so entrenched in our world culture that you could not possibly hope to make its recreational use illegal without a serious global revolution (i.e. a worldwide change in thought), so too is r*** so entrenched in pornographic fantasies. So many women do not want to be r***ing in real life but fantasize about it and are turned on by pornography where the man knows what he wants and uses the brute, muscly force of his body to get it. And so many more men are also turned off by r*** in real life but are turned on by the fantasy of forcing one's self upon a beautiful woman who initially refuses his advances. Some men prefer it if the woman never likes it, and others (like myself) prefer it when the woman comes around to liking it in the end.

I hate real-life r***, and so do a lot of my male and female friends. But I think a whole lot of people have fantasies regarding f***rced sex, and so any group which tries to eradicate that from the world of pornography is going to find itself fighting a majorly-uphill battle.

tl;dr these feminazis may have a lot of money but their entire fortune is one copper compared with the wealth of the men and women who are opposed to the feminists' agenda. They can't possibly hope to win. They're outmanned, outfinanced, out-everything. This is a war that can't be won.

There is a lot to debate here and much is not about this actual incident. This is just one of many examples of how everything has to be politically correct nowadays. We are now being raised to believe that being inoffensive should be our priority in life.

It goes back to the Islamic Cartoons in Denmark. "Beware, don't offend Muslims because they will blow you up." Then gay marrige. If you're not queer or don't respect butt pirates, then there is something wrong with you (and they should be allowed to marry and have kids). Then that news bit on this site about the controversy of google publishing historic maps of japan. The interest groups: "google should have known better, they should know everything about our culture and known we would take offense."

People defend the current president of the US, having no clue of what he is doing, solely because he is "African American." Me: "Look he is selling the US to the Arabs and here is the proof." Average American: "No, you just say that because he is black, he is doing a good job." Yeah, profiting of the war industry. (Fact: he has spent more money since his taking office than WWII cost the entire world)

With the race issue, if you commit a crime it had better be against someone of your own race, otherwise it will be a "hatecrime." Yes, you now have to be politically correct even when committing assault or murder.

Now, we have these women producing testosterone who feel offended because defenseless anime girls are being maltreated. Are you concerned that we are being brain washed to believe these people are correct? Where did common sense go? Wherever it went, it took freedom of expression with it.

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/05/12/equality-now-we-should-censor-other-countries/ - A follow up post regarding this topic.

The main question lies in the fact that there are games that simulate more violent crimes than the games these feminazis want to ban. Is it alright to make regulations banning r*** and sex games when there is a great abundance of games that depict murder of humans? If they're going to ban and regulate games as such then they should start with companies that publish this so called "shoot-em-up" games first before they start cracking down on games that depict sex.
What I'm seeing here are people who blatantly impose their own sense of moral code unto other people even when they have no idea as to how the culture of these people operate. What makes these feminazis so right? And what makes these publishers so wrong?
I have played such games but I never see myself molesting girls in confined spaces in the near future. I say it's never right to commit such acts. But if it's in a game, where nobody actually gets hurt, then sure go ahead. Go on and slap the butt cheeks of that "virtual girl" on your monitor until it gets red. It's just a game dammit. It's the same bit with western shooter games. But if they're going to ban sex games then they should do the same with these games.
If these people succeed in what they are trying to do, I say it's going to be a bleak future for us. Politicians can use the issue to their own advantage and sort of "implement" these bans and regulations so as to stay in office longer. Fuck it, even politicians here in he Philippines are riding down the "anti-loli movement" despite the fact that lolicon-oriented materials aren't sold here.

Another perfect analagy to this entire topic just occurred in the UK.
The foundation of this problem is that people in general have their blimey priorities off by a mile and a half.

You can think what you want about the war in Iraq, taxation and so on, but here is a radical example of skewed morals and priorities.

a) UK and the war in Iraq. "Naaaah 60 Billion GBP isn;t that much"

b) UK and the bank scandals/credit crunch "What, they paid 1.5 Million in bonuses when the government bailed them out with 500 Billion GBP??? Ooops, an oversight right?"

c) MP's (Ministers of Parliament) calling in the chips to collect compensation for expenses. "WHAT? He got 16,000 GBP to pay his mortgage off?< Let's through bricks through his window." <-- this happened yesterday.

Now, since when did it become more important to protect an MP from brick throwers than to restrict spending on bombing the living daylight out of another population group?

People have their priorities wrong to begin with and that is why feminazi's get the attention and actions driven through.

It is easier to allow them to run along, than to focus on real problems. And above all, it costs less.

Feminist groups should care about real Life - protecting virtual 3D Girls from r*** is really stupid.

I know this is a complete waste of time, since trying convince a bunch of foaming-at-the-mouth anti-feminists that feminism is not necessarily a bad thing is like trying to convince a group of Ku Klux Klan members that Protestant Caucasians are not inherently superior to anyone else, but since no one else seems inclined to voice an opposing opinion, I would simply request that you take a look at Equality Now's website before you condemn it as an "anti-free-speech group" that doesn't care about real life. You might also want to read Equality Now's response to precisely the kind of hate-filled reactions that fill this thread.

I can vouch for their claim that crime statistics from Japan are unreliable. Police discourage people from officially reporting a crime unless it's a slam-dunk case that will improve their own conviction statistics. When I reported a theft of ¥500,000 to the police, the officer I talked to scowled at me from beginning to end and tried to bully me out of filing an official report, since the circumstances made it a difficult case for the police to solve. Why did he go to such lengths to discourage me from reporting the theft? Because it meant one more unsolved crime that would affect his precinct's statistics.

r*** is almost always difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, and Japanese police would prefer that victims just "get over it" and not file charges. I know Japanese women who have been r***ing but didn't report the crime because they knew they would just end up being victimized again by the police and the so-called justice system, as well as being stigmatized as "that girl who says she was r***ing."

Finally, before you declare this to be a case of American or Western women trying to impose their values on another country, note that the current Board of Directors includes women from Palestine, Ethiopia, Argentina, Somalia, Nepal, and Japan. Bye. :bye:

P.S.: I don't know why this thread is filed under "News," since the so-called "article" in the first post is not an objective journalistic report but rather a diatribe.

Anyone for taking a reverse angle on this?

Hey daredemonai, nice comments and fancy meeting you in this thread.

Has anyone considered blaming Illusion? I mean lets face it, agree with them or not everyone has a right to say there peace on a subject and I respect a groups right to protest even if I don't agree with them. Perhaps Illusion could have put up a better fight? I don't see how any foreign group had any authority to make decisions for them. Lets face facts, they cowered from the pressure like a little schoolboy does to a bully.

I had been thinking about this and feel the company is as much or more to blame in this instance. I think they would have retained more respect by ignoring these people and standing by the rights granted to them in Japan.

Let me make it clear that I liked the game, a little sick and twisted sure, but I liked it nonetheless. Nether am I a fan of feminists either. I do like it when Japan tells other countries to mind their own business however and I think Japanese companies should be willing to follow suit.

Illusion could have made a reasoned argument that their games represent a certain kind of fantasy, and are by no means intended to glorify or condone real-life r***. (Commercial erotic manga created by and for women, and available in any convenience store in Japan, are rife with particular varieties of r*** fantasy, but that hardly means their readers want to be r***ing in real life.) They could also point to the lack of sociological evidence for a clear-cut cause-and-effect relationship between the fictional content of media and real-life behavior. And then, of course, there's the freedom of expression aspect, and the fact that the characters are entirely fictional. As a feminist myself, I can think of any number of counter-arguments, but they are nonetheless reasonable arguments that would at least present an opportunity for dialogue. Simply removing the game from the market does not do anyone much good.

But, again, speaking as a feminist, I think this campaign is a poor use of Equality Now's resources and clout. If they want to help improve women's conditions in Japan, they should first address the problems in law enforcement and the justice system that they themselves point to in their arguments. Surely helping to create an environment in which Japanese women felt safe turning to the authorities in cases of sexual assault or domestic violence is a far more important goal than eliminating a genre of video games that already has an extremely limited audience.

Finally, I would point out that there are many, many varieties of feminists, with wildly varying viewpoints, and simply referring to them all by the pejorative "faminazis" is, frankly, stupid. It's like pointing at Fred Phelps' hate-mongering Westboro Baptist Church and saying those wackos are representative of Christians as a whole.

sorry, i didn't know the news section was limited to objective journalistic reports only. perhaps this should be moved to the hen discussion section?

I wonder if there's an English-language article on the subject from the Japan Times. If we can find an article, you could add it to the first post and include a link to the Sankaku commentary.

EDIT: I found some:

The above three articles are in chronological order.
Just for balance, here's a highly subjective commentary (the term "diatribe" may apply here as well) from the other side:

All I have to say is that in my observations of humans "Monkey See Monkey Do"
But this argument doesn't hold up 100%. It holds up well, but not 100%. Were it to hold up 100%, the following would need to be true:

  • We condemn Walt Disney's Pinocchio because it shows a puppet-boy tying a heavy rock to his body and jumping off of a cliff into the ocean in a context that portrays his act as heroic.
  • We condemn the teaching of a vast swath of the world's history: because much of the world's history involves cruelty portrayed as justice (which may or may not be fair). For example, a child might get the idea into his head that he should drink a hemlock tea rather than testify in court if he learns about Socrates' noble suicide. A child might get the idea into his head to pick up a sword and behead people if he sees the hero of the film Gladiator doing it in contexts which always make Maximus (the hero) seem like he's doing the right thing. If a child learns about how the French government came to the aid of the Americans during the American Revolutionary War, and if that child grows up to become a world leader, he may get the idea into his head that he should spread democracy around the world by coming to the aid of nations which are being threatened by other, non-democratic nations.
  • We condemn many Hollywood films. For example, a man may abduct his mentally-retarded brother from an asylum after watching the film Rain Man in which a similar action is portrayed in a good light.

Et cetera, et cetera. The point is, you can't ban offensive material solely on the grounds that exposure might potentially corrupt members of your audience. You can use that as a guideline, of course, but it cannot be your only guideline. There has to be a line drawn between banning Pinocchio and banning Resident Evil.
