Mods - how can it be made more common knowledge to the average user that 504's are common place and nothing to worry about. ???

Hmmm ... ___ . :bingo: . ___ I have an idea ...

Is it possible to add words directly to the 504 message itself? Something to the effect of
"Nothing is broken. The server is simply busy with the large volume of users. Please refresh your page."

I don't know what's possible. I'm no systems administrator. Just a thought.

As far as I know such a message is possible but not for every forum software. That sure would help with spreading knowledge. But it doesn't help fixing the load problem in the end.

The 504 message is spat out by our webserver software, which happens to be NGinx (as opposed to vBulletin, our forum software).

I am unsure if the docs are editable, but I'd imagine it would be fairly trivial to modify the message.

Hopefully the 504 won't be around for much longer anyway.

Okay, coolkevin, and everyone else, lets just leave bpx alone for a while.

Let's stay on topic. Actually, I haven't gotten a 504 for a couple of weeks now. The next time one of you gets a 504, leave it on your screen for a minute and stare at it and think of some meaningful and concise words for the 504 message. Post those good words, and maybe Chompy will use them. Who knows - you could become famous. Perhaps your words will be seen by thousands and thousands of people.

And btw, Chompy - You're no slacker. I'm glad to say this again - We appreciate all the hard work you and others put into making this a pretty smooth running forum.

Tonight I started gettign 502 gateway errors in this thread: http://www.akiba-online.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68781&page=5

After some troubleshooting I got it to load, but there is an Ad that is taking up the whole top of the page by AdWorldMedia?

I understand needing ad revenue, but those large ad popups are ridiculous. I hope at least they are served from somewhere other than the forum server and aren't contributing to the forum sluggishness.

You need to use an adblocker of some kind. Never surf without one.

you can edit the .htaccess file to display what type of message you want given what the error iss 504, etc. it's not that difficult. redrooster is correct though: if the # of users exceeds 5k you get that fucking error message and it's impossible to post anything. javtalk is kaput so i think there was an influx of lurkers at this forum but honestly it's a damn shame that you can't access this site during japan late evening - early morning. i get horny the same time as they do!!!! :notagain:

i enjoy posting but really it's not worth the effort when you get the error message repeatedly and it takes 30+ minutes just to make a single post. If you search the japan forums/torrent listings you can get the new releases easily. Posting at a.o. is just for kicks, and the server lag really dampens the incentive to list newfound vids for everybody else.

I don't know if it has been addressed before, but I think there is or was hotlinking to images hosted here, sometimes I've noticed that images in some of my posts gets more downloads than the thread has views (for instance, 23000 views)

If it still is done, making it stop would help the server's workload, imo.

That's an interesting issue that we've attempted to address in the past.

We do have referrer blocking. As in, if your refer address is not *akiba-online.com* then you get a 403.

What we don't block is null refer linking, which is when there is no refer address. This is the case when you link using a redirect script or from a browser that doesn't send a refer, such as every single 2ch browser

We experimented with blocking null refers but because so many people have referring disabled in their regular browser (many of them do it without knowing what they've done or what issues that may cause) but we got a lot of complaints from people not being able to access our links and it ultimately gave us no relief from out server load issues (being as our load issues are php and mysql related and seeing as our images are served from a filesystem not a mysql database, and cached by our webserver, bypassing php and mysql altogether).

tl;dr: it causes more problems than it solves

Referer blocking is probably broken at the moment.

Also, the image caching was only making a significant difference with thumbnails (but not those on the main.php page). All other attachments still hit the PHP and MySQL.

Yup, A-O seems to be hit with the 504 errors alot lately, most of the time happens to be during evenings during my local time, up to late nights. Literally unable to navigate thru the forum at all, and all I mainly visit is the IV Download areas that's all, or the Movie/Music Direct Download areas. (not even talking about torrents section here)

Hope it gets resolved soon. If this is some server bandwidth issue due to how the servers hosting Akiba-Online on can't handle the max load user traffic and needs some better hardware, I think it's high-time to set-up some donation funding drive, I'm sure many anonymous users around including me would be glad to chip in a small token sum, I believe as long as everyone participates and chips in about 10USD I'm sure it will be sufficient for sure, to cover whatever cost it matters to upgrade the server.

Just my little suggestion, cheers.

Thank You for your valid suggestion, we are working on the problem now, and many issues have arisen, needless to say money is issue as well, but we used to have a donation fund set up, but that had to be stopped, there are many who would donate, and thank you for your support

i imagine guests suck up a lot of the bandwidth. maybe block them from seeing images in posts. a time limit between starting new threads would also be a good idea to stop bots from hammering the servers.

vBulletin needs a lot of care when put under stress.

If you ever have problems, try logging out. Anonymous users get most pages served quickly from RAM.

If you ever have problems, try logging out.

That was the first thing I tried but even logging-out only produced the 504 Gateway Time-Out message. The only thing that worked was to leave the site without being logged out (never a good idea), close the browser tab, re-access Akiba and immediately log-out.

Finally, I just stopped logging in for about five days.
