Japan to lose 30% of population over next 50 years

DAVID McNEILL in Tokyo
THE JAPANESE government has published stark new evidence that the nation is on the cusp of a demographic crisis, forecasting that its population will shrink by 30 per cent in the next half century.
A report released yesterday estimates that by 2060 the number of people in the Asian powerhouse will have fallen from 128 million to about 87 million, and almost 40 per cent of them will be 65 or older.
The report by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research warns that by 2110 the number of Japanese will further plummet to 42.9 million – a third of the current population – “if things remain unchanged”.
Japan’s population began falling in 2004 and is ageing faster than any other on the planet. Over 22 per cent of Japanese are already 65 or older and women now have roughly 1.3 children each, well below the population replacement rate.
Experts have warned for years that the inverted population pyramid is a harbinger of economic and social disaster, but the latest prediction by the institute, which is affiliated to Japan’s health and welfare ministry, is one of the most alarming yet.
“This is Japan’s biggest problem,” said Florian Coulmas, who heads the Tokyo-based German Institute for Japanese Studies.
“It affects every aspect of the country’s society, economy, culture and polity. Japan is ahead of the rest of the world. That requires adjustments that no other country has had to make in the absence of war, epidemics or famine. But Japanese politics is totally incompetent. The politicians haven’t woken up to the fact that this is a national crisis.”
Japan’s low birthrate is not seriously out of kilter with the rest of the developed world, but the country is unusual among its economic competitors in shunning mass emigration – or immigration – roughly 2 per cent of the population is classed as “foreign”. That, and one of the planet’s highest life expectancies, has seen the demographic changing.
Yesterday’s report predicts that Japanese women will live on average to 90.93 years in 2060, up from 86.39 years, and men will live to 84.19, up from 79.64.
The shrinking and ageing population means the government will struggle to cope with ballooning social welfare costs, and to pay for Japan’s enormous public debt – at $12 (€9.13) trillion it is the worst in the industrialised world.
Last year’s earthquake and tsunami, and the costs of cleaning up after the Fukushima nuclear meltdown, have added to the burden on state coffers.
Japan’s leading business federation, Keidanren, has for years spoken of the need for up to six million foreign workers, and some politicians have long called for lowering the drawbridge of fortress Japan to allow mass immigration.
“In order for Japan to survive, it must open its doors as an international state to the world and shift toward establishing an ‘immigrant nation’ by accepting immigrants and revitalising Japan,” said a 2007 report by a prominent group of conservative politicians.
Such warnings, however, have not resulted in policy action

Let me in on that! I'm ready to start Revitalizin'... :nosebleed:

Japan’s enormous public debt – at $12 (€9.13) trillion it is the worst in the industrialised world.

And I freak out when my library fines go over ten bucks...

I'd think that if the Japanese men would stop masterbating looking at all the porn they produce more babies would appear.

Well why is it that japanese men don't want to have sex with japanese women?

If a jap woman asked to have sex with her, I would do it no doubt! But they don't want to recover with mixed gaijin sadly.

So where exactly did they go wrong?

Send Filipinos there problem solve.
There's too many here in the Philippines.

Anyway, having a family w/ kids isn't a walk in the park coz of the financial needs.
The Japanese should start making noise if they want their "Kind" to still exist in the future.

If war breaks loose in the pacific, Japan's population will go down drastically.

i saw this on the news this morning. thanks for sharing here.

i think japan is still a very xenophobic country (in the 'world as an international society' context) as a whole. while people are friendly there is a definite "foreigner" mentality. the small foreign population adds to this and it is not working well in japans favour obviously. i hope the retarded government can take action before its too late (like france did 15 years ago).

Maybe its its due to the economy. Its expensive to raise a child a in a wealthy country. Diapers, healthcare, buying the child a new set of clothing after every growth spurt, food,Education and any other expenses that occur to raise a child.

Some people who are intellegent and make good money generally breed slower than those who are idiots and poor. The movie Idiocracy by Mike Judge gets its plot from this fact.Basically two people with average intelligence are frozen in suspended animation and 500 years later awaken to find the world is overrun by idiots and they end up becoming the worlds smarted people.

THE JAPANESE government has published stark new evidence

The way Japan's government handled the nuclear reactor incidents really makes you guess that the 30% will probably be a LOT more..

The incompetence and shadiness that was revealed during all those incidents is still beyond words..

But interesting information I guess.

Nothing new to be honest. Heard news years before regarding this topic like how a country where porn is everywhere and can be access from anywhere. They have from - porn movies to underwear selling vending machine, soap land to hentai animes and magazines etc etc etc even after all these things how can Japan remain a sexless country ?

So yeah the future looks very bad for Japan if they don't do something soon. I say either start making love and repopulate the nation or bring large amount of foreigner and let them do the good ...oh I mean dirty deeds :joker:

The difference is the world still uses the US Dollar as a reserve currency. Meaning the world is buying American debt to help keep the economy relatively stable (which is great for Americans). The problem is that the past 30+ years of US presidential administrations have severely undermined the value of the dollar, so if the world decides to stop trading US dollars as a reserve currency, America would essentially self-destruct overnight.

On the other hand, the Japanese Yen historically has never been a widely-used reserve currency. The gravity of Japan's public debt is also exaggerated: while the Japanese government has increased public debt over the past two decades in failed attempts to artificially re-inflate the economy (an example which American politicians should take note), Japanese citizens have taken it upon themselves to save money. In the unlikely event of a severe economic downturn in Japan, the public is able to offset a significant amount of that debt. Compare that to America, where the average student graduates with several thousand dollars of debt, and has a far easier time applying for credit cards with 0% interest than entry-level jobs with only an undergraduate degree.

You have to also remember: Japan actually produces commodities with high value. Think electronics, cars, and industrial technology (from the likes of Sony, Toshiba, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc). Japan has had to buy US dollars to keep the dollar-yen exchange stable, so that American consumers can continue to purchase Japanese goods. But if America goes bankrupt, Japan could just export its goods to other countries with big economic growth, like China or India. On the other hand, America has comparatively few commodities to sell. The American government continues to try to stimulate the economy by creating jobs, but a great deal of those jobs are public sector or service-related: people sit in an office, punching in numbers and shuffling papers, but at the end of the day nothing of tangible value is produced.

As far as Japan's low birthrate is concerned, I will simply reiterate what I've mentioned in other threads: Japan's low birthrate does not equal low sexual activity. There are such things as contraception, like birth control or abortion, readily available; and considering that Japanese education is rather free from abstinence-related Christian dogma, I'd say you'd find a better correlation between low birthrate and contraceptive use than with sexual activity.

Lool... i forgot about birth control.

Thanks, Guy. I will incorporate all of that into my mind, very useful. :D:hi:

by 2110 the number of Japanese will further plummet to 42.9 million

This is better than overpopulation. With overpopulation, you will need alot of $ to buy stuff for living and u need alot of space. Am i wrong again?, please correct if so, sorry T-T... thanks all. :)

I live in Japan and I am a foreigner. I also have a Japanese girlfriend and speak fluent Japanese. I write a lot of reports into Japanese societal problems, specifically 3 of the main 7 (low birthrate, aged problem, work availability) [out of those and inefficient government, stifled job market with majority part-time or not working jobs, extremem economic downturn and economic effects of the changing job market]. It is to note through research and as guy said

Japan's low birthrate does not equal low sexual activity.

that although there is sexual activity, changing social values bought on my an Americanisation of youth culture as well as a better understand of AIDS/HIV in Japan there is a massive use of contraception especially with young people (the main demographic that are "doing the deed"). The problem with 'hikkikomori' and other time wasting activities by those who have failed at either school or the extremely competitive job market could be seen as a reason why men are not doing their bit although the figures for these problems are severely blown out of proportion.

EzikialRage has a point also in that family planning in Japan is very money-centrically thought of. If you can't bring a child up comfortably (with the basics) then you shouldn't have one, is a common mentality. Although when one raises kids, most of the costs not already taken care of my the government are paid for by grandparents in most cases again making this point also blown out.

isityours is also correct in that Japan is still xenophobic although the government states many reasons for this, the main one being that other cultures will eradicate the home culture. Further, that when large numbers of Brazilians where let into the counrty (about 50 000) to fill in the job vacancies in the 80s, there was so much trouble with the way they worked and the way they were treated that they were mostly all sent back within 10 years. I am not treated as a foreigner when I open my mouth but until I do thats they way it is. Is this not the same of other countries? You see someone who looks different you class them as foreign do you not?

In no uncertain terms the main problem is three-fold.
1 - The Japanese government are a bunch of useless, spineless suits.
The population at large does not trust the government due to things like
continuous scandals and extremely quick terms of office and their
incompetence is almost unmatchable. And then there is this...

creepy+old+japanese+licking+ear.jpg

2 - The Japan economy is in about the 13th place in the world (compared
to 2nd 20 years ago). Chinese and Korean exchange student percentages
are now both over 70% whilst Japan is somewhere around 35%). Further,
graduates have a hard time entering the job market and most don't look
to work abroad to earn their money.
3 - Culture has changed.
A vast contraceptive and anti-STI campain has been running for close to
20 years now. From about middle-school it is taught that if you don't
practice safe sex you will either get pregnant (and thus have no life
prospects) or get a disease. Although it is also said this is not true in all
cases, a large number of 'accidental' (ie. unplanned) pregnancies have
been averted and as stated in the article the birthrate is now 1.3 far less
than the 5.7 it was immediately after the second world war.

A combination of all things can be seen in the findings of one of the Ministry of Health and Welfare's surveys "...more than a quarter of unmarried men and women between the ages of 30 and 34 are virgins. 50% of men and women in Japan said they were not “going out with anybody”.

Will the situation change? Probably. Will it happen quickly? Not likely.

It differs between people and obviously if you are in the relationship for sex or a relationship. Out of about 56 million Japanese females over the legal age, you can't mean to tell me that no one wants to get with you just because of your looks. Have you seen the competition?

this is so true, remembers me an article about japanese economy in the ny times

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/opinion/sunday/the-true-story-of-japans-economic-success.html?_r=1

I think the correct term for the Japanese economy in current global scenario is the 'least worse'... :pandalaugh:
