Unless Wikipedia is wrong, (I never doubt Wikipedia though), "Megaupload is an online Hong Kong–based company established in 2005 that ran a one-click hosting online service of the same name, along with its sister services. The site was shut down by the U.S. Justice Department on January 19, 2012, during an investigation into alleged copyright infringement.[2][3][4], leading to what activist group Anonymous calls 'the single largest Internet attack in its history'."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload

"The US government has shut down top file hosting service Megaupload and had its founder arrested on suspicion of causing $500 million in lost revenue to content sellers.
The Megaupload sites were managed through an international network of companies, head-quartered in Hong Kong.
Although not a US company and not managed from the US, the fact that it maintained US servers and supplied millions of US visitors with illegal downloads was considered ample legal grounds for the federal government to move against it."

They are incorporated in HK. All their servers are in Amerikkka and Amerikkka controls the internet via control of the majority of root name serves that are the backbone of the internet.

Fuck the US government...

To paraphrase the hardware store owner in the classic John Travolta movie, Saturday Night Fever:

"You don't fuck the U.S. government, the U.S. government fucks you..."

And while everybody's going to be hyperventilating and getting their underwear in a twist over this, claiming the high moral ground that this is only about freedom and principles let's ALL bear in mind that Megaupload founder Kim Shmitz aka Kim Dotcom aka Mr. Dotcom personally earned $42,000,000 from the site's operations in 2010.

$42,000,000 is a whole lotta "principles". And more than enough to qualify him as one of Occupy Wall Street's rapacious "one-percenters".

But, damn, they had great download speeds... :sigh:

Whoops :scared:
The domain might be fake.
Also the IP address.

hehe it would have been difficult to rebuild the whole thing from the jail (or while the others are on the run) :D

besides, weren't there more pressing matters to attend to, rather than chasing down internet interpreneurs (let's call them that)?

you know, something like the whole world economy is dying?

I think we should do what other site have done.

We should go "BLACK". Temporary shutdown. And the homepages would be about SOPA. And the links to participate in it.

If not totally shutdown. AT LEAST lets do something

FUCK SOPA FUCK FASCISM!

TF have written a (limited) analysis of the indictment itself here: http://torrentfreak.com/megaupload-what-made-it-a-rogue-site-worthy-of-destruction-120120/

Extract:
n the U.S., online service providers are eligible for safe harbor under the DMCA from copyright infringement suits by meeting certain criteria. However, the indictment states that member of the “Mega Conspiracy” (capital M, capital C no less) do not meet these criteria because… …they are willfully infringing copyrights themselves on these systems; have actual knowledge that the materials on their systems are infringing (or alternatively know facts or circumstances that would make infringing material apparent); receive a financial benefit directly attributable to copyright-infringing activity where the provider can control that activity; and have not removed, or disabled access to, known copyright infringing material from servers they control.

Okay, just to get this straight...

In order to avoid the wrath of the AmeriKKKan empire, you'd have to:

1. Base your company in another country
2. Locate your servers in another country
3. BLOCK all American I.P.s so US citizens cannot be "victim" of those corrupt pirates, thus rendering the AmeriKKKan empire unable to prosecute them for the lack of legal ground.

Righto?

inb4 China starts to flood the file hosting market... :secret:

I think to prevent the same thing from happening to other file-sharing sites I suggest not using the actual name the of the file when uploading. But instead use a random alpha numeric code in place of the actual file name.So if the file name is Tenchy Muyo 01.mkv then it should be retitled t0m01.mkv or ac3ba01,mkv or some other random name. This would help deter those who report copyrighted material and in a way help protect various file sharing sites should the government try to crack down on other sites to.

Just watch..in 10 years you won't be able to download a pirated movie outside a Torrent, Newsgroups, Freenet or Share. I imagine all the other File sharing hosts are next. Just wait...

To those that say we're "suffering" because of Megaupload going down. Are you kidding me? People are starving to death and yet we're suffering because of not being able to download some random porn we don't need.

Btw did the bill got passed in the parliament already ?

not yet since have not have chance yet. there other things still on table. one like our budget issue and people trying to run for big office. we will not know in till Tues since when we find out more on this

more bad news on this topic

According to this article, a lot of file hosters are feeling the effects of this.

http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/65920166.html?thread=11374720422

FileServe & others start deleting files, might block USA IPs, close their affiliate programs

Now other filehosts are running scared. Who's next on the FBI target list?

As many of you are probably aware of, Megaupload was shut down by the Feds. In response to that, Anonymous took down several government and music websites.

What are file sharing affiliate programs?

File sharing hosts pay uploaders with monetary incentives in a variety of ways.

For example, they might pay $35 for 1000 downloads of your files. Or they might pay $15 for every "premium" signup referral you make.

What are they closing these programs?

Most filesharing hosts have legalspeak in their Terms of Service that make users/uploaders responsible for all uploaded content, instead of the host itself.

The monetary incentives offered to uploaders from affiliate schemes could potentially give them massive legal problems.

Due to the Megaupload case (as well as Hotfile & Rapidshare) it has been shown that these Terms of Service loopholes are not considered valid by the USA / FBI.

What the authorities dislike more than rights infringement, is people earning money from rights infringement.

give more insight that what i post most or all files sharing services are blocking us ip address.

Well, for some reason I can't seem to get JAV torrents to work for me lately so I rely on the downloads section for my fix. Guess I'm out of luck on that front too.

How are these sites going to survive if no-one outside of the uploaders can use them?
