Original Megaupload story:

Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.

The site's founder and others have been charged with violating piracy laws.

Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

Investigators denied a link to recent protests against proposed piracy laws, according to the Wall Street Journal.

On Wednesday, thousands of websites took part in a "blackout" to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa).

And to think.. all this without a single conviction yet... just a suspicion.

no it was usa gov that did this. since to many site where making complaint about sopa and pipa. so the usa government went out to make an example out them. if more and more company's make complaints expect for example to be made out of company's or message boards or people doing this stuff. they can even go after company like I-tunes that sells or allows free download of music games books or any other digital stuff.

I know it was the USA who did it. What I was saying is that they did so without a single conviction. The site was taken down without so much as a trial yet.

But, it seems as if Anonymous is on the move now....

we had laws all ready set up to stop this. its just weird timing that they use the law all ready set up to do this. they are just showing how powerful they are and proving to people do not mess with us gov.

Gawd bless Murikkkuh.

I'm not following the whole scenario as much, but I heard that this "law" wouldn't affect websites based in other countries. So basically if these companies moved to some other country and used foreign servers, they wouldn't have anything to fear from Uncle Sam?

Well...Megaupload's based in Hong Kong isn't it? If the US can shut stuff down and arrest people in Hong Kong, then how would it "not affect websites based in other countries"?

Unless Wikipedia is wrong, (I never doubt Wikipedia though), "Megaupload is an online Hong Kong–based company established in 2005 that ran a one-click hosting online service of the same name, along with its sister services. The site was shut down by the U.S. Justice Department on January 19, 2012, during an investigation into alleged copyright infringement.[2][3][4], leading to what activist group Anonymous calls 'the single largest Internet attack in its history'."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload

"The US government has shut down top file hosting service Megaupload and had its founder arrested on suspicion of causing $500 million in lost revenue to content sellers.
The Megaupload sites were managed through an international network of companies, head-quartered in Hong Kong.
Although not a US company and not managed from the US, the fact that it maintained US servers and supplied millions of US visitors with illegal downloads was considered ample legal grounds for the federal government to move against it."

I may be wrong. But from what i heard, their HQ is located in HK, but their server is located in US.

And FYI, they were not arrested in HK, but in New Zealand.
