Speaking only from experience with Japanese gf's, one of their main reasons is due to public baths. Over here in the states, they've preferred the "convenience" of a trimmed style, but whenever she or both of us visit Japan she needs to let it grow back to a "respectable" length which means no trimming for a couple of months in advance.

For each visit to Japan, at least a couple of small vacation trips are made to distant areas and most hotels/inns have communal baths or onsens where she would go in with her mother.

Most US girls shave some part of the pubic region (at least the bikini line). It is not uncommon for them to shave most of it off too.

the primary reason for it is purely logical - if you know what the culture is all about.

public bathing (as in those large public baths that are quite popular in japan) is a very common and japanese-esque cultural trait.

having no pubic hair is considered taboo b/c girls especially will be looked upon as 'whorey' by the other patrons of these public baths. (image is very important in japan)

these baths are very similar to the idea the Romans had during their time.

Someone with pubic hair is something natural. If women stand naked in front of me, i think it's better if she has pubic hair and she will look better with it. If you look at playboys from when it began to present, you will see a trend of natural to trim and shaven. It also correlates to the porn in the same manner and definitely has a lot to do with the bikini/bikini line and constant pressure for beautiful body presentation. Most of this is a very American/Western idea as most other countries follow Western Pop Culture.

I'm American and honestly I cant fathom how Japanese can stand giving oral to either sex that doesn't manage their pubic region.

This isn't true. Almost everyone I have slept with has shaved without waxing and most who do wax only wax their bikini line not the whole thing. Normal people trim or shave and a really small margin actually wax everything.
