Hi all. Sorry if this is not the right place. I had a hard time finding a suitable forum. I guess this one's the closest. uzzled: Anyway, I'm playing a Japanese video game called The Cameraman for PS1. I just need to know what the words in the black background mean. The 2 words at the bottom are clear: OK & Cancel. The other 6 I have no clue about. Plz check out the attached pic. I'd appreciate your help. Thanks. :byebye:
難易度 nan'ido "Difficulty Level" or "Degree of Difficulty" ノーマル noomaru "Normal" オリジナル orijinaru "Original" (??? no idea how that's a different difficulty from "normal", but whatever) サウンド saundo "Sound" ステレオ sutereo "Stereo" モノラル monoraru "Mono" 決定 kettei literally "Determine" (with implied する) or "Decision", the English translation would be "Accept" (as in "Accept the changes you've made to the settings") or more commonly in the PC world "Apply." 戻る modoru "return", as in "to go back to the place from which one just came." The common English word choice in video games would be "Back," although I agree that we see "Cancel" a heck of a lot more in our games and PC apps. Anyway ... You might be interested in this thread, although it may be a little too advanced for you at this stage.
Thank you very much, Sakunyuusha! The game is actually a remake of an old computer game, so the "Original" difficulty level must mean that of the old game. I'll need to experiment with these 2 difficulty levels to see what the differences are. Thanks for referring that translation thread, but as you said, my Japanese language knowledge is technically ZERO, and although I planned on learning Japanese, I've recently given up realizing that it would take a lifetime to learn, and my life schedule is really busy these days. :sigh:
Another word. Hi again. I wonder what this word mean as well.. :miserable: Thank you. EDIT: Figured it out but I still don't know how it relates to the game. (de:,fr (adj-na,n) cool, course (of medical treatment)
Is that the entire word? All it says is クール, kuuru, "cool." No idea if it means cool temperature 涼しい suzushii or if it means cool awesome 格好いい kakkou ii or すげぇ suge~ (masc. variant on 凄い/すごい sugoi, "amazing!" "wow!"). Either way, it almost looks like it would have to be part of a larger noun-phrase, like "cooldown time" or "cool points" or something. To just say "cool" all by itself, and in katakana Engrish no less (when the Japanese have perfectly fine words of their own for both meanings) is sort of bizarre. I think. Then again, I'm not Japanese, so what the hell do I know. ;p ^_^;
I think it's going for something along the lines of "cool points," because it's a number to the right of your total score, スコア (sukoa), if it is where I think it is (top-right of your original picture). Maybe it has something to do with tricks you performed in-game? I have no idea. Like we discussed before about Normal vs. Original, this could be another instance where your game is using game-specific terms that make sense to players but not to outsiders. EDIT: The other possibility is that there's a photography-specific use for the term that I don't know, and if it means "course," then heck, that could be the stage counter for all I know. :\ For example, in TV talk, WWWJDIC reports that "kuuru" can be used to mean "a series / season of a television program." So if your cameraman is a cinema or television cameraman (and not just a snapshot cameraman), then maybe they're using the word in that sense, to refer to the series that you're working on or to how many series you have successfully filmed, or something. Without knowing more about the game, an outsider really can't answer this question, since the word isn't all that common and has multiple possible meanings.
I think this Kanji will explain it (if only I know what it means!). Below the title クール there's a column of numbers beside the stage scores column. Each number has the Kanji shown in the attached photo beside it. Sorry about the terrible quality of the photo. *it really is hard to be non-Japanese* :sigh: EDIT: I've edited the photo to make the kanji clearer.
