I know this DHT thingy works, because I have both downloaded and seeded a number of torrents (some from this forum, AO) that had no trackers. Akiba-Online had a torrent tracker for a while, and some people used it when creating new torrents. That tracker has been down for months now, but the torrents still work, if someone seeds.
What torrent client software do you use? Perhaps it doesn't recognize DHT. I recommend uTorrent. (I don't get kick-backs or anything - I just recommend it because it has worked well for me.)

DHT = "Distributed Hash Table." First appeared in 2001; it provides a way to track torrents when trackers are down or have stopped tracking the torrent by making every peer a tracker. While DHT wasn't developed specifically for P2P software, applications that use DHT are mostly P2P programs.

Wikipedia. Admittedly, a lot of that info is beyond my understanding.
BitTorrent, Inc. created what is known as Mainline DHT, which is an alternative DHT implementation. It has been adopted by several clients; Azureus/Vuze is the only listed client that does not support it. As I have said before, a plugin is required to use Mainline DHT on the Azureus/Vuze client.
