TORRENTS - FAQs, speed issues, whatever.
DON'T ASK TECH QUESTIONS ABOUT TORRENTS UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS ENTIRE THREAD.
If you don't find your answer in this thread, post it as a question in this thread.

This thread was originally started as a tutorial on how to reseed a torrent (see original post below). However, I think it could become a good place for people, both newbies and veterans, to post questions and answers about how torrents work, why a torrent may be slow, reseeding, etc. Also, about giving 'Thanks'.
The general concept is that some AO veterans are tired of some members (mostly, but not always, newbies) yucking up torrent sharing threads with questions like 'why don't I see peers or seeders', or 'why is the torrent so slow'. So, this is the place (we hope) where all their questions will be answered.
Please understand, dear AO veterans, that the existance of this thread (or any other like it) will not stop the less than intelligent posts from appearing where they should not, but at least now there is a place to direct them.
Here's the link. Every time someone says "I'm stuck at 22%", and you just posted your torrent yesterday morning, rather than getting mad at them for the hundredth time, just send them here.

How to reseed a torrent ...
... when someone requests, and, if you have the original file(s). You don't even have to have all the files - it still works, for those files which you do have.
_____________________________________________
This example is based upon the torrent client 'uTorrent', however the principals discussed here apply to other torrent clients.
Also, this example is based upon the windows operating system.
_____________________________________________
Step 1
If you no longer have (or never had) the original .torrent file, download it from the original poster. In the 'File Download' applet that appears when you click on the .torrent attachment, you can choose between 'Run' and 'Save'. Choose 'Save', and navigate to the directory where data file(s) are. (The data files are the actual videos and/or picture files). When the download is complete (usually takes 1 or 2 seconds, even with a slow internet connection), Choose 'Open Folder'.
Step 2
Right-click on the .torrent file, and choose 'Properties' from the sub-menu. Highlight the value in the 'location' field (it usually scrolls, start on the left and pull your mouse hard to the right), right-click, and choose 'copy'. Close the 'Properties' applet.
Step 3
If you already have the .torrent file extension is associated with your torrent client software, click on the .torrent file.
Otherwise, right click on the .torrent file, and choose 'Open with ...' and choose or navigate to you torrent client software. (If see a check box that says something to the effect of 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file', check it).
An 'Add New Torrent' applet appears. In the 'Save As' text box, replace whatever value is in there with the 'location' value that you copied from step 2 (right-click and paste). Click 'Okay'. Edit - The file names that your torrent client is looking for must match the file names of the data files that you pointed to.
Step 4
There is no step 4. Your done. As seen in the image below, uTorent will check to see that your data file(s) match the data file(s) specified by the torrent. This takes just a few minutes, depending the speed of your machine. Assuming that they match, uTorrent will begin uploading, that is, seeding the file(s). Oh, and by the way - if you have missing files, (for example, if you threw away the video cover image) uTorrent will attempt to download those missing files from other peers, while still seeding the file(s) that you do have.
One final note ...
Obviously, you can't seed a .iso file using a .avi file (etc.). But, even if you have acquired a file (a video) by some other method besides a torrent, like by direct download (like from rapidshare) or with 'share', if the file matches the file specified by the torrent (the number of bytes should be exactly the same), it will seed.
So, to all you folks who choose to be kind and help those of us who were unable to download such and such a torrent when it was originally posted -
---- Thank you. ----

this should be sticky. The short live of torrents is the biggest disadvantage in comparison with emule/edonkey.

Nice tutorial. I hope it helps inspire some re-seeds.
The biggest disadvantage to emule/edonkey imho is the consequences of participating in the worlds biggest honeypot. But if you feel everything on your HDD will stand up in court, knock yourself out :)

Some people seed/reseed.
Yes, some people either have their torrent client set up to automatically drop torrents the moment they reach 100%, or they do so manually. For some this may be because they have limited bandwidth (perhaps a dial-up connection). For others it may be because they just don't even know they are set up that way. It may be a default setting of their torrent client software. However, some folks are just plain selfish leechers. Alas, such is life. We will always have folks like that, in all realms of life.
There are definitely some good folks out there, who leave torrents in the client for a few days, being courteous to reseed after they have finished downloading. We say thanks to them, we appreciate it.
Now some of us, from time to time, find a vid and/or pic torrent that was posted a very long time ago and which is no longer being seeded. (A good example is this Aki Taniguchi video which was posted way back in January by IDIW, and which I have never downloaded, and for which I have requested a reseed in that thread). Maybe this person is a newbie (don't spite someone just because they are a newbie. You and I were, at one time, too). So the person requests that the torrent be reseeded. Almost assuredly someone out there has the requested vid/pic file(s), but that someone may say 'why didn't they download it when it was posted?', or 'he's just a newbie', or maybe the person who has it is lazy or just doesn't care. This thread is not for them (obviously).
This thread is for those folks who are, in fact, kind and generous, and who wish to be helpful, but just didn't know that they could be, or just didn't know how. I think that i_g_h is mistaken. I am certain that there are good folks like this out there.
You know I enjoy (for the most part) the time I spend here at Akiba-Online. My goals in coming here are not only to find good pics and videos, but also to have fun chit-chatting and becoming part of a community and making friends. But in the months since I've been here I've noticed the levels of friendliness and comradery and the showing of appreciation diminishing. I, for one, will do my small part to reverse this trend.
Thank you for listening. Peace.
--------------------------------------
btw - this thread was created as a response to the inquiry of ginkoigatari, a newbie (somewhat), who seems genuinely interested in sharing and participating.
--------------------------------------
btw - I would like it if the mods made this thread a sticky. Thx for the suggestion, loginname.

Quark!
leechers are a problem of both programms.
but while it is possible to share maybe hundred files parallel with emule this doesn't work for torrents. If a file on emule is established with more than 10 seeders this can last for years.
Almost 2 years ago I made a rip of Saaya's Holiday and copied it to my emule folder. (I didn't even post the ed2k-link somewhere) After six month I deleted the file.
Nevertheless it is still available.
Don't tell me this would be possible, if the emule users all were leechers.
Or referring to hentai or anime in general.
For torrents there is hongfire - cool site.
But compare it with http://anidb.net
this looks ... virtually complete.
My emule- and torrent folder are the same. When my ratio is ok I kill the torrent file at some time. But I don't necessarily have to delete the video/iso... file. If it is popular enough it automatically gets revived on emule.

General suggestion for any kind of request what-so-ever. Applicable to all facets of life when requests are being made.
Please provide as much information as possible about the thing you are requesting.
This isn't just for lolilover, but for everyone. It's common sense.
Me? I'm a kind person, and will share things, seed things, whatever. But I'm also a lazy person. I'm not going to bother researching to find out what 'KIDM-018' is. I don't organize my files by meaningless codes. At least tell us who the idol is. Even better, include the name of the vid, perhaps a cover pic, if possible. Maybe a link to the original post. Also, attach the torrent, if you are asking for a reseed.
My collection of u11 vids is pretty darn large, if that's what your looking for (but, not so many photo sets). If I have it I'll seed it for you.

I consider myself a kind person also. I share things, and seed when requested. I even reseeded the above Kidm18 request, albeit with no thanks.
I'd like to assist with some reseeding, but It's no longer worth the effort. Digging through different archives, re-downloading an ISO from a ng or other share services is tedious and time/bandwidth consuming.
Call me fickle, but I'm not going through all that effort for 1 or no thanks. I do not expect 100 thanks, but having 200 peers with 1 thanks is ridiculous

Alright, I'm a newbie here and have a question. I am using utorrent I'll start a download and I usally limit the upload to like 100kb while I'm downloading, then once the full file is downloaded, I open it up to upload at unlimited bandwith for 24 hours afterward. Is this a exceptable practice, or just a drop in the bucket. I have a cabel modem, and think I'm being ok, but maybe i'm just being a jerk and don't realise it. I'd like to think I was helping the next guy get his download, but if I'm not, I'll leave it on for longer, if 24 hours is not a exceptable amount of time. I always click the thank you on any file I download, I'd like to think I'm not just taking without helping, please set me straight, if my practice is not exceptable.
Thank you
