Would it be to prohibitive to host a private tracker on another server so as not to bog down the website? By private tracker I mean a tracker which accepts connection from registered AO users only.

It would be an extra monthly expense, and it would also put an extra strain on the existing server (more registered users == more load.) Not worth it, IMO.
